College and University [Academics] (30)

I've seen on several threads on this fine establishment of users claiming what college they are currently attending.
Somebody here got accepted to Oxford, which has probably got us all beat in terms of rigor bragging.

So, what university did you attend/are currently attending? Did you have a good time?

I went to O(klahoma)SU for graduate school. Was it fun? It was very bland time as only a couple of people were interested in
the things I was, but I did learn a lot of stuff I needed and things for hobbies.

I went to university. Ain't saying which one. I got out right as COVID started, so that was fucking balls.
Wasn't worth the time, effort, or money and trying to get a non-dead-end job has been pure suffering, even after places allegedly started hiring again.

My friends there were totally into the shit I like though, and I had fun in that regard. All of my current friends are people I met there.

Don't expect any replies from MIT grads, they couldn't read the thread.

I went to the best school in my state for teaching. I will never be a teacher but at least it’s close to home.

In theory, the internet should allow us to get rid of these elitist universities and make knowledge more open and available but this hasn't happened.

There is one guy where who got MIT so he beats us all.

Don't worry I studied at Saitama Institute of Technology.

Did your teacher show you his PENIS?

It has happened, we have all the knowledge on our fingertips now. But we also have a lot more noise and distraction now.

Even with scihub, a lot of information is locked away. And the educational system values professional certification over competence. The internet is just a giant porno box. The guys who invented PCs and the internet were influenced by the idea of peer to peer learning networks and community developed tools replacing the education system, but what we ended up with is a gigantic porn dispenser.

Tokyo University medical graduates are idiots

Shii is a PhD student at Cornell. That beats all of us when it comes to rigor bragging. Although this really isn't his site and none of the old users are here anymore.

Shii received his PhD from Brown, right? I've done a lot of research on his studies, he seems to work with Japanese Universities a lot more than ones closer to the U.S.
Anyways, I don't know think either would hold the most rigor if all you're learning is what a bunch of island people drew in the dirt 2000 years ago. The only reason people go to Brown or
Cornell is because they can't get into Yale.
>Although this really isn't his site and none of the old users are here anymore.
If you mean the 2003 w2ch by RIR7, then we probably have one, tops. If you mean 0037's w2ch, then that's probably half this current site. Both could be defined as "his".

Yeah Brown. I got confused. Its not uncommon for Americans to go abroad because even the middle classes there have to sell their kidneys to afford graduate programs and if it fits your niche then why not go to Japan? Fees are much much lower generally speaking. I don't understand why US universities are so ridiculously selective despite their huge endowments. Still being a PhD candidate with a dozen publications means he probably beats everyone here.

>If you mean 0037's w2ch, then that's probably half this current site
Huh? Really? I figured most of the users are new. I heard the guys running this place emailed Shii which is pretty funny. Probably got no response. I figure a guy that smart is probably embarrassed to ever have been associated with fringe otaku boards. I've hung out on these kind of sites so long my brain has turned to miso soup.

17 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/12 09:49

I forgot about his publications, I wish I could say that about myself. Even though he made the completely irrational decision to devolve from the high standard set by otaku textboards, I still like to think he wonders about us occasionally.

Say what you will about MIT but their model railroad club looks cool as hell

>I wish I could say that about myself
Why? I'm embarrassed at being academic focused. I need to be less academic because it feels like I'm being brainwashed into a cult of ivory tower snobs. It would be cool to have publication sure but it would be cool to have places to publish ideas or cool thoughts that aren't weighed down by university bullshit.

Would you prefer the more humble method of academia? A lot of scholars used to publish their works anonymously some 500 years ago, a lot of the sculpted masterpieces in cathedrals and towns were done without a name so they didn't receive any praise.

22 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/15 08:07

If I could publish stuff anonymously, I absolutely would do it. You can't compare those scholars of the past to modern academics. For all their vices, they were much better than the average cookie cutter academic.

23 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/15 08:15

It's probably a lot easier if you are eternally absorbed into your hobby.

24 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/16 07:33

Medieval scholars were probably closer to otakus minus the consumer consumption part. Stay cloistered in their rooms all day obsessing over some obscure thing and getting mad at people for not knowing some arcane thing.

25 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/19 10:47

I have a feeling shii might be lurking around here when I saw that Toshihiko Izutsu post. Like otakus would even know who that guy is.

27 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/28 06:39
