【ニート】Our own Castle (14)

1 Name: 名無し : 2025/06/05 01:34

You ニート、just think. The confinement of your room is your castle. You are the king, in it is has it's own cultures and interests, and favorite cuisine. It is a palace around you, a palace of your liking. You have a diplomacy hotline with other castles, this is your computer through w2ch. Through world2ch you can contact and interact with all the other ニート around the world, some that cherish similar culture, interest, cuisine.
And for those of you in college? Your dorm is your dominion, below another power in the fiefdom but it is still under your domain. In it you have all the cultures you could wish, and the same diplomacy outlet with castles and dominions around the world.
Here's to the prosperity of our kingdoms!

I "rent" my castle, and some monthy pythonesque plumbers turned off le hot water for 2 wix! mad

and my connection today working basically in between of 2G-128K ISDN. I can't even load speedtest. so I went to lightweight world2ch textboard, because I know it has some eurobeat kareha that is surfable

5 Name: Nameless : 2025/06/05 17:22

128K? That's a whole 2 times faster than dial up, you have no room to complain.

6 Name: Fez : 2025/06/05 17:28

do you guys know GyudonAddict? Because I see 3 of them.

128kbit ISDN is like 10kB/s in practice.
A single 100kB picture will add 10 seconds of loading to a page.

it could be worse (dialup for me back in 2006 was like 3kB/s), but you're scraping the barrel

3kb?! You must have had a jagged line or something because I at least got about 35kb~/s with dialup.

do the math lol, 1kB/s is 8kbit/s (bytes vs bits - you'll be sold service in bits per second since the number is bigger, but bytes per second is the useful number since file sizes are generally not measured in bits)

a perfect zero overhead 56kbit connection has an absolute max speed of 7 kilobytes per second
naturally, there is overhead, real-world speeds are more like 5-6kB/s on a good day

shit, doing the math, I was probably thus actually connecting at 33.6kbit/s (which means my family was doing something wrong or maybe our modem was just shit and ended up negotiating down to a lower rate; I'm pretty sure we were buying 56kbit internet at the time), leading to an absolute max of 4.2kB/s, and a more realistic number being 3kB/s

Yeah, I confused kbits with kB.

I still have my Zyxel Omni 56k bought to me by step father.
I do know some dial-up gateways do work abroad, but making international call is expensive but may worth it.

Tried to check if there is such option for internet over Short Wave radio, but it seems speed slower than 56k! Starlink not being sold & doesn't work officially in my place.
It will be nice to discuss existing options of BIG alternative networks (data exchanges) that may work in parralel when Internet is down. I know only Scuttlebutt, but it's small.

Do you ever do anything with telnet?
I have an amiga system rigged up with a modem that I use.
