I got into anime by watching a little bit of everything (except for well-known series like One Piece or Naruto), and that's still the case.
Now I watch more older anime (from the '70s to the '90s)
However, my guilty pleasure is romance anime www
I think I've seen pretty much everything (except the really bad ones)

When it comes to manga, I read them occasionally
Unfortunately most of the ones I want to read aren't available in French (or even English in some cases).
And the only type of media I don't mind reading in English are visual novels, because I have no choice www

Grew up with 4kids pokemon and yugioh, secretly enjoyed haruhi in middle/highschool then watched mostly "psychological horror" denpa-coded shit. I dont watch much of anything now, but considering reading some old PC98 VNs and maybe whatever VNs have been ported to PS Vita. Will take Recommendations!

a real otaku is obsessive to an extent
being casually into mainstream anime isn't very otaku
while being heavily into into old-school shoujo is

that being said, being obsessive about mainstream anime would also be quite otaku
there has to be some amount of deep passion
