[Theatrical] Favorite Movies and Films (43)

I believe some of the best movies ever made were Kill Bill Vol.1 and Vol.2.
It is good to watch old asian action films too, as they inspired Kill Bill.
Things with Bruce Lee, like The way of the Dragon for example, are great.

I haven't really thought about this question that much, but Terminator 2 might be my actual favorite movie. Everyone talks about how cool the special effects are, and like... yes. They should talk about that even more, because they're fucking amazing. T2 is just a great looking movie in every regard. Everyone plays off each other really well, and even if it loses the sense of tension the first movie has, it just comes together so goddamn well.

There are a fair few other movies I liked a lot, even if I wouldn't say they were my favorite.
I remember being REALLY pleasantly surprised by Bullet Train for example, which I thought was going to be shit going in. There are a few bits where I feel like the staff really wanted to be like Tarantino but weren't really able to do manage it, but it really was a fun movie anyway.

...it probably would have been an even better movie with him at the helm, however.

Also, even though it is actively not a good movie, I had an amazing time with Moonfall. It's basically a B-movie with as much budget as possible. I'm genuinely annoyed it bombed so hard. Watching it with a buddy in an empty theater was an amazing experience.
FUCK THE MOON!

I think a lot about how Top Gun (the first one), in terms of plot, is just not a good movie... but in nearly every other aspect? Pure masterpiece.
It's like they distilled the absolute essence of style into every goddamn shot. Top Gun is an actual masterpiece of cinematography. It's such a visually striking movie, I can't stop gushing about it when I think about it.
The sequel isn't quite as good in that regard, but the story is much, much better, so it evens out.

I hate them singing "great balls of fire", I hate the song. Everybody sings it because of them and I hate it.

4 Name: Nameless : 2025/08/04 23:26

I'm not particularly fond of Tarantino movies. They're too edgy.

5 Name: Nameless : 2025/08/05 01:18

>>4
that's fair
being edgy is his thing, so if you don't like that, there isn't much he has done that would appeal to you

what movies do you like?

6 Name: Nameless : 2025/08/05 02:37

I'd say his only good movies are Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and Death Proof

7 Name: Nameless : 2025/08/05 04:17

I really like criminal suspense, and I think the Silence of the Lambs is one of the best films of that genre.
I love Dr. Lecter's escape scene, I'm sure everyone here has seen the movie, but the scene starts at 1:14:15:

9 Name: Nameless : 2025/08/09 10:35

Sion Sono films are pretty good.

10 Name: Nameless : 2025/08/10 06:17

Back to the Future. I just like fun, goofy 80s movies with weird concepts.

11 Name: Nameless : 2025/08/10 12:41

it has been far too long since I've seen Back to the Future
it might actually be 20 years...

Harry Potter, the first few, as suggested by the background of this board. I don't really know each one that well but I didn't like the way the latter half was produced.

26 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/11 08:44

( ゚~゚) Where were we, uh, oh yeah. The Shining(1980) is cool, not spooky but interesting in terms of development.

27 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/11 16:28

Personally, I like the original Jurassic Park. I think the theming and subtle details in it are great.

The first two Harry Potter films are also very good. The first one especially feels like a Christmas movie.

People confuse scary with shocking. If it doesn't make you jump, its not scary. Well the Shining is scarier than those jump scare movies because its frightening on a conceptual level. Imagine being isolated out in the wilderness in a snow storm. Your shelter is the only source of safety right? But the hotel in the Shining is an evil entity that feasts on people. It slowly wears you down mentally, sucking the life out of you, makes you do something you think you never would. So you are stuck between freezing to death outside or going insane inside. This general concept is kinda shit in the book but Kubrick really made it work on screen.

29 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/17 21:03

Battle of Algiers is pretty good. I like the pseudo documentary style.

30 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/18 08:10

Kubrick did a great job. He directed perfectly in terms of camera placement, what music to play and when, and setting the perfect ambiance for suspense. Misery is also good, and also written by Stephen King. Similar conditions as you listed where weather and the other person's insanity makes you stuck in a no-win scenario.

31 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/19 00:59

>>30
My only gripe with Kubrick's adaption is that Jack Torrence just isn't a sympathetic character. In the miniseries and the book you see the loving fatherly side to him as he grapples with his inner demons and begins to fall apart mentally. I guess that kind of character development is hard to pull off in a tight 2 hour feature. Other than that, the novel is pretty meh which seems to be the case for most things Stephen King writes.

32 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/19 07:48

You make me want to actually read the novel to see how Jack contrasts.

33 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/19 07:52

>>32
Never read anything Stephen King writes. Not worth the time.

34 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/19 08:32

Do you like Misery?

35 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/19 10:41

>>34
The movie was fun. The book? Ehhh... King can come up with compelling concepts but never polish them into anything really great. He's a fast food writer. He whines about film directors editing his work, but tbh they are mostly improving his rough cuts.

36 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/20 01:38

any giallo fans here?

37 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/21 03:54

Giallo is more weird than anything, I don't really like it. If Psycho falls under that category then I guess that would be the only one.

38 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/23 05:24

Psycho isn't really giallo. It doesn't have a masked killer or a mystery plot.

39 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/23 08:54

Well then I like 0 giallo films, you had your shot to claim it.

40 Name: Nameless : 2025/09/24 01:13

What if Abel Farrara directed the w2ch movie?

41 Name: Nameless : 2025/10/17 06:52

I saw this JAV where a bald guy shoved his entire head neck deep into a girl's vagina. I can't unsee that.

42 Name: Nameless : 2025/10/17 07:46

I've only heard rumors of this JAV, you wouldn't have it in your inventory would you >>41?

Fuck no. I haven not watched porn since then, ever.
