Maybe pick something you've already read in english or have seen the anime of, so you won't feel lost if you don't understand everything
Preferably a slice of life or something aimed at children, as those usually have furigana

Yotsuba&!

yotsuba is widely recommended but surprisingly hard because it is full of exxxxtremely casual japanese that you will have a hell of a time looking up

I never had trouble with the slang, even if the phrasing was unfamiliar I could always understand the meaning somehow. Maybe I subconsciously learned some casual Japanese from all the anime I've seen over the years?

you probably did
it's all stuff that you can't really look up, but if you have a grounding in common speech patterns already, you can figure things out
